# Showerhead and Flexible Hose Clean, Descale and Disinfect: SOP

A clogged, scaled showerhead is one of the few outlets that turns whatever is living in it into a fine breathable spray aimed straight at a person's face. Limescale and the biofilm it shelters give *Legionella* somewhere to settle, and the hose feeding the head is a warm, low-flow dead leg of its own. This is the hands-on procedure for stripping, descaling and disinfecting both, written for the operative actually doing it.

It assumes the work is already on a schedule and someone has decided this outlet needs doing. What it gives you is the order of operations, what each step is for, and how to tell when it is finished, plus the call that gets skipped most often: when to clean the hose, and when to bin it.

## Before you touch it: competence, PPE and chemicals

This is a skilled task, not a wipe-round. The operative needs to know how the shower comes apart, how to handle a descaling acid and a chlorine-based disinfectant safely, and how to recognise a hose that is past cleaning.

The two chemicals are the real hazard. A descaler is typically acidic; many shower disinfectants are chlorine-based. Mixed, or splashed in an eye. They are dangerous. Work to the COSHH assessment for each product, wear the gloves and eye protection the safety data sheet specifies, ventilate the room, and keep the descaler and the disinfectant physically apart so they are never in the same bucket. Concentration and soak time come from the product label, not from habit, follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific head and hose you are working on.

Gather everything first: replacement head and hose if needed, a small brush or old toothbrush, two clearly labelled soak containers, the descaler, the disinfectant, and the outlet's record sheet.

## The procedure, step by step

Each step below has a "done when" line. If you cannot honestly tick it, do not move on.

1. **Plan and notify.** Confirm the outlet against the asset list, tell occupants the shower is out of use, and put a sign on it. *Done when* the right outlet is identified and no one will walk in on the work.

2. **Run to a safe temperature, then isolate.** Before dismantling, run the shower briefly to clear the line, but be alert to scald risk, hot water from a shower outlet can injure exposed skin quickly [2]. Then isolate the supply or switch off the unit so it cannot be turned on while the head is off. *Done when* the outlet is flushed, safe to handle and cannot be energised.

3. **Remove the head and the hose.** Unscrew the head and disconnect the flexible hose. Treat the hose as part of the job, not an afterthought, its bore holds water and biofilm between uses. *Done when* both are off and you can see into the hose ends.

4. **Inspect and make the replace-or-clean decision.** Look at the head's face plate and the hose's inner bore. A perished, cracked, internally furred or kinked hose, or a head whose nozzles are corroded, is replaced, not cleaned, cleaning a degraded hose just resets a part that will fail again. *Done when* you have decided clean or replace, and logged it.

5. **Dismantle the head.** Take the head apart as far as it is designed to go, face plate, spray disc, any rubber nozzle insert, washers and flow restrictor. Scale hides in the joints. *Done when* the components are separated and the scaled surfaces are exposed.

6. **Descale soak.** Submerge the scaled parts in descaler at the strength and for the time the product instructions state. Do not guess the dwell. *Done when* the soak has run for the product's stated time.

7. **Scrub and clear the nozzles.** Brush each surface and work the individual spray holes clear so the face plate is open across its whole pattern. *Done when* every nozzle is unblocked and no chalky deposit remains.

8. **Disinfect soak.** Move the cleaned parts into the disinfectant, never the same container the descaler was in, at the product's stated concentration and contact time. The hose bore needs to be filled, not just dipped. *Done when* all surfaces, including the hose interior, have had the full contact time.

9. **Rinse thoroughly.** Rinse every part with clean water until there is no chemical smell or residue. Residual disinfectant or acid left on a head feeds straight into someone's spray. *Done when* the rinse runs clear and odour-free.

10. **Reassemble and run off.** Refit the head and hose, restore the supply, and run the outlet to waste for long enough to clear any trapped chemical and confirm a normal, even spray. *Done when* the shower runs freely, sprays evenly, and the water is clean and chemical-free.

11. **Record and close out.** Log the outlet, the date, clean or replace, any defects found, and sign it off. *Done when* the record is complete and the sign comes down.

### What "finished" actually means

Three acceptance criteria decide whether this outlet passes: the head and hose are **visibly scale-free** with every nozzle open; the shower is **free-running** with an even spray and no dribbling dead nozzles; and there is **no residual chemical**, no smell, no film, clean water. Miss any one and the job is not done, however long the soaks ran.

## How often, and where it fits

Cleaning, descaling and disinfecting showerheads and hoses is commonly cited on a quarterly cycle, but the interval is set by the building's risk assessment, not by the calendar alone [1]. A hard-water care home with high-risk residents may justify a tighter frequency; a softer-water site with low-risk occupancy may sit on the standard cycle. Where scaling is heavy, the frequency is telling you something, log it and feed it back so the schedule, and the water chemistry behind it, get reviewed [3].

This procedure sits below the planning layer: deciding *which* outlets, *how often* and *who* is a scheduling job, and electric showers carry their own aerosol considerations. Here, the point is simply to do the physical task correctly and prove it.

## FAQ

### How often should showerheads be cleaned and descaled for Legionella?

A quarterly cycle is the figure most often cited, but it is guidance, not a fixed rule, your risk assessment sets the actual interval based on water hardness, how the outlet is used, and how vulnerable the occupants are [1]. Heavy scaling between visits is a signal to clean more often and to review the schedule.

### Should I clean the showerhead and hose, or just replace them?

Both are valid; the inspection decides. A head and hose in sound condition can be cleaned and reused. A hose that is perished, cracked, internally furred or kinked, or a head with corroded nozzles, is replaced, cleaning a degraded part only delays the next failure, and a new component is often the more reliable, recordable outcome.

### Does descaling on its own kill Legionella?

No. Descaling removes the limescale and the deposit that shelters bacteria, which matters, but it is not a disinfection step. That is why the sequence is descale, scrub, *then* disinfect: you clear the scale so the disinfectant can reach the surfaces and the hose bore that the scale was protecting.

### Is cleaning the showerhead the same as disinfecting the water system?

No. This task treats the outlet, the last few centimetres of pipe, the hose and the head that generate the spray. It does not address the wider system, the calorifier or the storage tank, which are covered by their own cleaning, disinfection and temperature controls. Outlet hygiene is one layer of control, not the whole scheme.

## What to do before you start

Pull the asset list and the outlet's last record before you go to the shower. Check two things on arrival: that you can isolate the supply, and that the hose is sound enough to reuse. If the hose is perished, swap the replace step in now rather than soaking a part you will throw away, and make sure both your soak containers are labelled before either chemical comes out of its bottle.
