Getting a care home Legionella-compliant
Care homes serve people who are far more vulnerable to infection, so water safety carries extra weight, including scald-safe temperatures and HTM 04-01 thinking. Here is what to get right.
Do this now
- 1Ensure a current, competent risk assessment that reflects vulnerable residents and any augmented-care areas.
- 2Hold hot water hot and deliver it scald-safe at the point of use (TMVs serviced), and keep cold water cold.
- 3Run and record the routine: sentinel temperatures, flushing of low-use rooms, TMV servicing, showerhead cleaning.
- 4Consider whether a water safety group and plan, and pathogens beyond Legionella, apply to your setting.
- 5Keep the records current; in a care setting they are part of safe care, not just compliance.
